About Allt Mhuic

Allt Mhuic is one of five ravines on the north shore of Loch Arkaig. A small reserve, approx. 100 hectares in size, it supports a small population of wild pine trees not recorded on the Caledonian Pinewood Inventory.

Allt Mhuic is owned by Forestry & Land Scotland. It’s situated between two conifer plantations and managed by Butterfly Conservation because of the rare butterflies, namely the Chequered Skipper, which are commonly found here.

Sixteen established pine trees are growing along the burn amongst mixed broadleaved woodland.

The site was deer fenced and as a result, natural regeneration of pine and other tree species is visible in the surrounding area.

About Coille Phuiteachain

Coille Phuiteachain lies at the extreme western end of Glen Loy and is a fascinating area of ancient Caledonian pinewood.

It is home to several huge ancient pines plus old wood-pasture oaks and hazels. It was first designated as an ecological reserve by the Forestry Commission in 1931 and its conservation has resulted in a lush and varied ground flora with tall heather, deep moss and classic west coast pinewood rainforest lichens and bryophytes.

It also has a fascinating cultural history, with many of the older trees showing signs of past use. There has been a long history of state forest management here and restoration of PAWS around the core area has been underway for many years.

About this field trip

This Virtual Field Trip was created by contributors to Scotland’s Pinewood Conference 2024 as an alternative to a physical field trip for those unable to travel to, or access, two contrasting pinewood sites.

Coille Puiteachain has long been acknowledged as being a special place and is listed on Caledonian Pinewood Inventory, whilst Allt Mhuic is a recently designated ‘Wild Pine’ site.

This Virtual Field Trip will remain on www.pinewoods.scot as a legacy of Scotland’s Pinewood Conference 2024 and as a tool to share some of the highlights and challenges of pinewood management with others

Huge thanks must go to Phil Formby, Lee Harrison Mellor and Jill Donnachie from the Woodland Trust who created it; to Richard Thompson, Ann Goodenough, John Taylor and Callum Strong from Forestry and Land Scotland and James Rainey and Jane Sayers from Trees for Life who gave so much of their time to orient, inform and generously share their observations and experience. Thank you all.

We hope you enjoy immersing yourselves in the sights and sounds of Scotland’s pinewoods.

Old oaks

Coille Phuiteachain is not only home to Scots pine veterans, it is home to old oaks too.

Historically much of the pine in Glen Loy was felled in the late 1700s under the management of the Commissioners of the fortified estates. As a result, by 1772, William Morris’ survey map labels the wood as mainly birch surrounded by cornfields.

Today we can see some of the 250-year-old pine and oak trees have grown wide, round crowns, typical of trees matured in an area of scattered wood pasture, with open, cattle-grazed spaces.

Steep slopes

Some areas of Allt Mhuic include steep slopes. These ravines are home to a rich diversity of native trees and woodland plants.

The rugged topology has protected these slopes from heavy browsing. Many relict wild pine populations are found along ravines for this reason.

The attractive waterfall and natural rock arch (pictured) is surrounded by mixed-age oak, birch, rowan and hazel trees as well as the more rarely encountered elm & guelder rose.

A Planted Ancient Woodland Site (PAWS)

In the 1970s this was an area of mature conifers. Prior to that there were attempts to establish pinewood here including drainage and planting, but they largely failed.

Today you can see lots of natural regeneration here, especially birch and Scots pine. Their success is probably to do with effective deer control at the establishment stage. There’s also multiple veteran pines here that have provided a quality seed source.

One of the main challenges at Phuiteachain is non-native conifer species seeding into areas we’re trying to restore. Forestry and Land Scotland periodically clear out conifers in a fell-to-recycle operation to ensure non-natives don’t take hold and shade out the light for other species or begin seeding into the PAWS area themselves. As time passes and the vegetation becomes more rank, this risk reduces. But creating buffer zones (space) between commercial plantations and PAWS sites is also important.

Deer Management

Phuiteachain has a strategic fence around the whole block to separate the woodland from the open hill where there’s a higher deer density. Within the strategic fence, Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) have created three separate compartments to prevent further browsing damage caused by deer incursions. Regular communication with neighbours helps to minimise incursions but fence maintenance is an ongoing challenge. Wooden posts last less time than they once did, and the weather (heavy snowfall & drifting) means that deer occasionally simply walk over a fence.

There are practical challenges involved in managing deer here – it’s steep - so most extraction has to be done by hand. Finding deer also becomes more difficult as numbers reduce and regeneration comes away.

FLS use a contract stalker model at Phuiteachain but plan to revert to using in-house stalkers who can spend time searching once deer numbers become more stable. They also hope to move towards no internal fencing when woodland condition improves.

Across the whole of Scotland FLS shoot around 42,000 deer, around 1/3 of the national cull on approximately 9% of the land area. In the west region they cull approx. 8,500 deer per annum, the vast majority of which ends up in the food chain.

Hazel woods in Scotland’s rainforest

Hazel is a keystone species in Scotland’s rainforest and supports some of our richest communities of lichen and moss.

These old hazels are home to lots of showy species of lichen including large numbers of yellow specklebelly lichen, lobarion and some of the ‘dot and script’ Graphidion lichens typically found on smaller diameter smooth stemmed hazels.

Hazel grows naturally as a multi-stemmed shrub, without coppicing or any other human intervention. It follows a continual cycle of renewal and decay, and this supports its diversity.

A typical hazel stool has a cluster of thin, medium-sized and thick stems, each of which attracts different species. Small lichens form thin, colourful ‘crusts’ on the smooth bark of young hazel stems. As stems grow older and thicker, the bark roughens, trapping moisture. Old stems support bryophytes and larger, leafy-lobed lichens like tree lungwort.

Most of the lichens found here require ‘old-growth’ woodland, or long periods of ecological continuity. They aren’t found in hazel that has been coppiced or in hazel stands that have recently expanded. That’s what makes them special.

Hazel was one of the first woody species to establish in the West as the ice retreated about 11,000 years ago. In fact, hazel woods are among Scotland’s oldest woodlands; older by far than some of our Caledonian pinewoods.
